Barkly Street, St Kilda
Barkly Street is a proposed development of seven townhouses. The site is on a corner of a major road and adjacent to a secluded park. From the site there are potential views to the south-west of Port Phillip Bay.
The development comprises two types of townhouse distinguished by their interaction with the ground plane. The first type provide living spaces on the ground floor adjacent to private courtyards. The second type, situated above the communal carpark, are connected to the ground plane via a staircase. Some of the townhouses incorporate roof terraces to capitalise on the potential views from the site.
The development utilises solid masonry construction to the lower levels with lightweight cladding above. The strong contrast in materials, textures and colours mitigates the perceived mass of the development. The irregular arrangement of repeated components such as windows and doors adds a subtle interest and dynamism to the overall composition.
